Community journalism

(I’ve written many more articles for newspapers in Kern County since I last update this page; ask me if you’d like to see more samples.)

Award-winning feature article

I so enjoyed writing this article. The inspiration was from a Facebook post. A friend shared photos her father took long before she was born. It happened that I had known her parents. The article about Bernie Dodd’s photos was published in The Bakersfield Californian and the Tehachapi News and went on to win the Best Feature Story (Weeklies) award in the 2022 George F. Gruner journalism awards program.

2021 California Journalism Awards magazine

The California News Publishers Association asked me to write articles about some of the winning entries in the 2021 California Journalism awards competition. Unfortunately, digital versions of my four articles in this magazine in July 2022 aren’t available, but you can help support CNPA by ordering a copy for $8 (postpaid).
